for WTF??:
CHICAGO --

It was Rocio Palacios who first noticed the woman who appeared to need help.

It was 8 a.m. when she and her husband, Erasmo, dropped their 6-year-old daughter off at school and had picked up their 22-year-old daughter to go out for breakfast when they saw the woman waving her arms at 53rd Street and Kedzie Avenue last November.

The Palacioses, of Chicago, claim the woman approached their car, parked outside Manolo’s restaurant, leaned in to the passenger side where Rocio was sitting and asked Erasmo if he wanted oral sex for $20 or sex for $25.

The couple laughed, realizing this wasn’t a woman in distress after all.

But within seconds, Chicago police swarmed the family car, hauling Erasmo Palacios out in handcuffs. He was charged with solicitation of a prostitute

His daughter, who had just run in to exchange her coffee for a hot chocolate, screamed, while his wife cried in fear.

Eight hours later, Palacios, who has no criminal record, was released from custody. And weeks later, charges against him were dropped.

Now, Erasmo Palacios is suing the city and the officers involved in his arrest, saying they violated his civil rights during an incident he described as both frightening and ridiculous.

“I’m so lucky I was with my wife -- imagine if I had to try to tell her and she wasn’t with me,” he said, before laughing at the image. “She’d never believe me. Never.”

A Chicago police report offers few details, saying only that it was Erasmo Palacios who asked for sex, never mentioning his wife in the car or his daughter nearby.

Attorneys Lonny Ben Ogus and Joe Cavanaugh also want to know what happened to the family’s 1983 Mercedes. It was impounded that November day and, Palacios said, his wife and daughter were even threatened with arrest as they tried to stop police from taking it, as they were left stranded that morning.

The city wants more than $4,700 in towing and storage fees if he wants the car back.

City officials declined to comment on the status of the family’s car and the Palacios case, while the undercover female officer involved in the arrest couldn’t be reached.

so apparently this dooshbag:

didn't do anything wrong. cleared by an internal board. and people wonder why arkansas is made fun of. ehhh, fuck it, right? they're just kids. what could they possibly do to the cops?

"This was a minimal force issue," Police Chief Bobby Southard told The Sentinel-Record. "He didn't resort to anything above hand control techniques and handcuffing."
oh. yeah. clearly.

“Are you going to convict Jack Bauer?” Judge Scalia challenged his fellow judges. “Say that criminal law is against him? ‘You have the right to a jury trial?’ Is any jury going to convict Jack Bauer? I don’t think so.
i can't say, for sure, whether i'd convict jack bauer, as i do not waste my time with that right wing wet dream of a show.

however.

as i'm sure eeeeeeeeeveryone with a brain is thinking right now.

you see...

the way TELEVISION SHOWS work is....

people fucking wrote that. from staaaaaart to fiiiiiniiiiiish. people chose what happened. and what did not happen. PEOPLE. SAT DOWN. AND DECIDED that life in 24-land was going to go that way.

it's not PROOF that this retarded-ass line of thinking is valid.

my god. this is about as retarded as pointing to THE BIBLE as proof that THE BIBLE is true.

what. in the fuck.

Charges dropped against grad student who cussed at SoCal airport:
The Orange County District Attorney's office dropped the charges Wednesday "in the interest of justice," said spokeswoman Susan Kang Schroeder.
see now, "in the interest of justice" to me says that they dropped the charges because it's unjust.

however, the young spitfire is going ahead with her countersuit.

of course you have those that somehow get into the upper echelons of academia without understanding their craft:
John Eastman, a constitutional law professor at Chapman University in Orange, said Venable's suit may not hold muster.

"Freedom of speech does not cover obscenities," he said.
oh it sure as hell does. look, pal, why do i have to be bound by your subjective application of the use of "obscene"?

or, as the litigant put it:
"I do not believe that it is constitutional to have a law that criminalizes 'obnoxious' behavior without defining the word 'obnoxious,'" she said.
fuckin' a right.

at least there's this guy:
Allan Ides, a constitutional law professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, said it was unlikely the prosecution's charge would've stood against the First Amendment. He added the state does not have the right to excise certain words from the language "no matter how offensive people think those words are."
damn straight.

however
The resolution to ban the so-called "N-word" is largely symbolic as it carries no weight in law and those who use the word would face no punishment.

Lt. Cmdr. Charles Swift, 44, will retire in March or April under the military's "up or out" promotion system. Swift said last week he was notified he would not be promoted to commander.
...
"Charlie has obviously done an exceptional job, a really extraordinary job," said Marine Col. Dwight Sullivan, the Pentagon's chief defense counsel for Military Commissions. He added it was "quite a coincidence" that Swift was passed over for a promotion "within two weeks of the Supreme Court opinion."

man. what a crazy coincidence.

welp, let that be a lesson to you kids, thinkin' about goin' in to the armed services. you can be so goddam good at what you do that you argue a case in front of the supreme court... but that don't mean you'll get promoted.

which especially sucks with that megasweet "up or out" deal.

gee. i wonder if the pentagon knew about that up or out business when they decided to pass him over like that. mebbe someone should let them know.

» when is a fascist not a fascist?
the answer, of course, is when the fascist is looking out for your best interests. regardless of what you think your best interests are.

oh wait. no. that's still fascism.

and this, my friends, seems to be all too common these days:
A Mississippi couple whose home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina said two men who later identified themselves [falsely!] as Secret Service agents pretended to be Fox News journalists when surveying their neighborhood in advance of a March 8 visit from President Bush.

The men arrived on March 3 at the site of the beachfront home that Jerry and Elaine Akins are rebuilding in Gautier, Miss., Elaine Akins said in a telephone interview yesterday.

“They didn’t show any cards or anything,” Akins said. “They just came up and said they were with the media, and then they said they were with Fox. They just talked to us and asked us about rebuilding our house. Then, after everything was over with, they approached us and they were laughing, and they said: ‘You know, we really weren’t with Fox. We’re government, Secret Service men.’ “
...
The men eventually revealed their identities and displayed blue lapel pins bearing the presidential seal. Akins said she does not mind that the men temporarily misled her about their identities.
wow. doesn't mind, huh? kinda indicative of the american public these days, don't ya think?

do you mind that the president broke that law to spy on people int his country without a warrant? ehhhh. no. because he said he's only doing it to terrorists.

yeah. like we have every reason to believe this guy when he opens his big yapper.

see, the language they use is insidious. ask yourself this: who does he mean when he says "terrorist"? of course, you just assume he means al-qaeda, or someone like that, right?

that's what he's counting on you thinking. except that the government most certainly does NOT do that. they have admitted, already, to classifying the insurgents in iraq, members or PETA, members of greenpeace, and simple protesting vegans as 'terrorists'.
In Georgia in 2003 a DeKalb County Homeland Security detective jailed a vegan activist at a meat processing plant protest for refusing to hand over a piece of paper on which she had written the license number of an unmarked government car.
but america just rolls over, fat, dumb, and happy, thinking the government is just trying to protect it from those bad 9/11 people.

if you read the transcript of bush's recent speech in ohio... you will probably not notice something striking: he starts out by describing the opposition in iraq as "terrorists and insurgents"... but by the time you get to about midway down the text, the word "insurgent" has disappeared. they are all now referred to as "terrorists".

why is this striking, you may ask? well first off, i would punch you in the face for asking such a stupid question. however, i can't reach you so i'll just explain it. it's the same thing as with the domestic "terrorists". that is the twenty-five thousand dollar word, nowadays. Terrorist. with a capital T. you say that and all of a sudden, 9/11 pops into people's minds. whether you told them to think that or not, they will. and bush knows this. because it's been fuckign working. so when he uses that keyword, just like some sort of hypnotic suggestion, he has already gained some support for WHATEVER he decides to do, or wants to do, or is trying to justify doing. because he told you that they're "terrorists".

if you doubt this, you have a serious lack of knowledge of human psychology.

and speaking of human psychology, here's another thing that profoundly confuses me. i heard dick "straight shooter" cheney defending the war in iraq again on the hourly NPR podcast. it seems he's figured out that people that think the war in iraq has created more terrorists are stupid because, derrr,
Terrorist attacks are not caused by the use of strength. They are invited by the perception of weakness.
well gee, sport. i guess that explains why all the experts say that one of the reasons al-qaeda is pissed at us is because WE HAVE MILITARY BASES IN THEIR HOLY LANDS.

so... what? the american military is a weakness? is that what you're saying here, mister "last throes"?

yeah. last throes. this is the guy that, 10 months ago, said that he has figured out that the insurgence was in its last throes. and now we have the president, in a CLEAR set-up to make sure a republican is elected in 2008, saying that we will be in iraq well past 2008. last throes.

so someone fucking tell me why ANYTHING THAT COMES OUT OF THIS GUY'S MOUTH is ever treated with any sort of validity whatsoever?? last throes. heh. fuck him.

last throes.

america seems to be displaying to me that it's in its last throes. last throes of being on the forefront of the global stage. last throes of being the shining beacon of freedom. of intelligence. of reason.

we're all scared shitless of terrorists. and of the gays. and of abortion. but we're all totally cool with quickie vegas weddings and the death penalty and torturing people we've held in custody with no hopes of a trial. we're scared of the government getting their nose in our business, but we're totally cool with them telling us what we can and can't do in the name of national security.

and we seem to forget that our politicians are politicians. they've been studying their entire lives about ways to take advantage of public opinion and fear.

and if you think that they're not gonna see you shitting in your pants every time someone says "terrorism" and look at that as a golden opportunity for you to allow them to do whatever the hell they want as long as they can make it look like it was something to do with terrorism... than you are a fool. and should probably move somewhere else.

oh and also: please stop voting. you're fucking up the curve.
